Immigration Abuse
Immigration abuse happens when someone uses your legal status as a weapon to control you. They manipulate your fears of deportation, separation from your children, or being reported to the authorities to dictate your every move.
Immigration Abuse
If you're an immigrant, your abuser has a powerful weapon. Your legal status.
Immigration abuse is the use of your immigration status to control you. Threatening to call immigration. Threatening to have you deported. Threatening to take away your children. Using your fear of being sent back to control your every move.
What Immigration Abuse Looks Like
Threatening Deportation
She threatens to call immigration. To report you. To have you deported. She uses your legal status as leverage. "If you leave me, I'll make sure you're sent back."
Withholding Documents
She hides your passport. Your green card. Your immigration papers. She controls your ability to prove your legal status.
Misrepresenting Your Status
She tells you your status is something it's not. Tells you you're illegal when you're not. Tells you you'll be deported if you leave her. Lies about your options.
Controlling the Process
She controls your immigration case. Fills out paperwork incorrectly. Misses deadlines. Sabotages your case. Makes sure you stay dependent on her.
Using the Children
She threatens to take the children. Tells you you'll never see them again if you're deported. Uses your children as leverage to control you.
VAWA Is for Men Too
VAWA stands for the Violence Against Women Act. Despite the name, it's not just for women.
VAWA provides protections for immigrant victims of domestic violence, regardless of gender. It allows you to self petition for status without your abuser. You don't need her to sign anything. You don't need her permission. You can apply on your own.
If you are an immigrant and you're being abused, you may be eligible for VAWA. Even if you're a man. Even if the name makes you think it doesn't apply to you.
It does.
What You Can Do
Know your rights. You have rights. Even if you're undocumented. Even if you think you don't. There are protections. There is a path.
Document everything. Document the abuse. Document the threats. Document her use of your immigration status against you. Use the Abuse Log. This is evidence for your case.
Consult an immigration attorney. Find a lawyer who understands VAWA and male victims. Don't take legal advice from your abuser. Don't take legal advice from the internet.
Contact a VAWA accredited agency. There are organizations that can help you with the VAWA application. They understand the process. They understand your situation.
Make a safety plan. If she's threatening deportation, you need to protect yourself. Plan ahead. Know your options. Know who you can call.
Don't believe the lies. She doesn't have as much power as she says she does. She can't just call immigration and have you deported. It doesn't work that way. She's using your fear. Don't let her.
Your immigration status does not make you less worthy of safety. You have rights. You have options. And you are not alone.
