Emotion: Walking on Eggshells
Definition
Walking on eggshells is the constant vigilance that comes with living with an abuser. It's the awareness that anything you say or do could trigger an explosion. It's the monitoring of every word, every gesture, every mood. It's a full-time job that never pays.
WHAT WALKING ON EGGSHELLS CAN LOOK LIKE
-
Checking her mood before you speak
-
Rehearsing conversations to avoid setting her off
-
Monitoring every word that comes out of your mouth
-
Feeling like you're constantly performing
-
Exhaustion from the effort of managing her emotions
HOW WALKING ON EGGSHELLS WORK
Walking on eggshells is a survival strategy. Your brain is trying to keep you safe by predicting and avoiding danger. The problem is, there is no safe. Abusers will always find something to be angry about. You can't control her. You can only exhaust yourself trying.
HOW WALKING ON EGGSHELLS MIGHT SHOW UP IN YOU
You might notice yourself tense whenever she's in the room. You might feel your heart rate spike when you hear her voice. You might avoid conversations you need to have. You might feel like you're never truly relaxed.
WALKING ON EGGSHELLS DOES NOT MEAN
Walking on eggshells doesn't mean you're weak or paranoid. It means you're responding to a real threat. Your body knows you're not safe. Listen to it.
WHAT TO DO ABOUT WALKING ON EGGSHELLS
-
Recognize the pattern. You're not "just being careful." You're managing her emotions. That's not normal. That's survival.
-
Stop preparing. Rehearsing conversations. Checking her mood. Managing your words. Stop. You can't control her by controlling yourself.
-
Practice being neutral. You don't have to manage her reactions. Let her react. Let her be upset. That's her problem, not yours.
-
Set a boundary. "I won't have this conversation when you're angry." Or "I'm going to take a walk. We can talk when we're calm." And then do it.
-
Plan your exit. Walking on eggshells is a sign that you're not safe. Use that as fuel to plan your way out.
NO-BULLSHIT HONESTY CHECK
Not every tense moment is walking on eggshells. Sometimes there's conflict. That's normal. But if you're constantly monitoring her mood, constantly adjusting your behavior, constantly trying to prevent her reactions - that's not normal. That's not a relationship. That's a hostage situation. Be honest about the difference.
